During the afternoon some 300 Palestinians, Israelis and international activists held a procession on the eve of Easter and Passover during which they marched from Bethlehem to Jerusalem through the Rachel’s Tomb crossing in the separation wall. The demonstrators, among them the mayor of Bethlehem and members of the Palestinian parliament, wished to reach Jerusalem in order to realize their right to worship in the city which is holy to the three religions. Today some 150 men and women gathered outside of the courthouse to protest the arrest of 17 activists at the previous day’s protest vigil in Sheikh Jarrah. Despite the police’s demands, the judge released all the activists without any conditions.

For several months Ta’ayush is involved, together with other organisations, in the struggle against the take-over by settlers of Palestinian houses in the neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah and other areas of Eastern Jerusalem.
Our activities in the neighbourhood take two main forms:
1. Weekly demonstrations which have been taking place for several weeks and help to bring to the Israeli, Palestinian and international media the disgraceful happenings in Sheikh Jarrah.

In the last few weeks every Friday , a demo takes place protesting the expulsion of residents of Sheikh Jarrah from their homes. During yesterday’s demo the Police used excessive force against the demonstrators, injuring over 10 people and arresting 27 of them. The arrested demonstrators spent the night in custody, and tonight will be brought in front of a judge to prolong their arrest. We were invited to join a march of the children and residents of Tuwani, Tuba & Maghaer Al-Abeed, protesting the barring of the road from Tuwani to the neighboring villages by the Ma’on settlers, and repeated assaults of the Tuba & Maghaer Al-Abeed children on their way to Tuwani schools. As customary recently, the Israeli “security” forces had put many efforts in denying access of Israeli and international activists to the area – declared as “restricted military zone”. We demonstrated against a clear threat of demolition of the home of Mustafa Abu Hilal, and a threat to destroy the road whose end we covered with asphalt with our own hands in the working days in Dar ElHanun, in the summer of 2001.
