Urgent aid to the Occupied Territories

The war on Iraq has started. In addition to all the suffering and destruction this will inflict upon the peoples of the Middle East, Sharon’s government is liable to take advantage of the state of emergency to attain its long-term goals by causing further injury to the Palestinians, de facto annexing regions along the “border zone” or continuing the creeping transfer of the civilian Palestinian population, either directly, through military action, or indirectly, via local actions of para-military settler groups.

The war is sure to worsen the social and economic crisis in the Occupied Territories: closure and curfew, media blackout and isolation from economic and medical centers will seriously harm the Palestinian civilian population. According to the latest reports by the World Bank, with more than half of the work force unemployed, 60% of the population of the Occupied Territories live under the interntional povery line of $2 per day. We are already receiving reports of a severe food shortage. Families that are already struggling for their daily existence are unable to stock up on the minimum necessary for the coming days.

The War on Iraq is a moment of truth for all those who believe in a common Arab-Jewish future, a future of peace and justice for all the peoples of the Middle East. This is the time for all of us, Jews and Arabs, to stand together and do our best to thwart any atttempt by Sharon’s government to exploit the war to promote its plans of annexation and creeping transfer of the Palestinian civilian population. During March we embarked upon an urgent campaign to transport emergency supplies to the Occupied Territories. Tons of flour, rice, sugar and basic provisions have been transported to villages in the West Bank.

On Saturday, March 22nd, we held a mass solidarity convoy carrying urgent aid to villages in the Salfit region that are in danger annexation, face military blocade and curfew, hunger and unemployment. We cannot let the war atmosphere close our hearts to what is happening around us. The Arab-Jewish conovy is our answer to Bush-Sharon’s policy of death and destruction.

סיוע חירום לאוכלוסייה הפלסטינית בשטחים הכבושים

המערכה הצבאית נגד עיראק החלה. בנוסף לכל הסבל וההרס שתמיט על כל עמי המזרח התיכון, ממשלת שרון עלולה לנצל אותה כדי לממש את מטרותיה ארוכות הטווח – להכות בפלסטינים, לספח בפועל אזורים לאורך "קו התפר" ולקדם את הטרנספר הזוחל של האוכלוסייה האזרחית פלסטינים בין במישרין, באמצעות פעולות צבאיות, ובין בעקיפין, באמצעות פעולות מקומיות של מתנחלים חמושים.

המלחמה תחריף ככל הנראה את המשבר הכלכלי והחברתי העמוק בשטחים הכבושים: סגר ועוצר מוחלטים, איפול תקשורתי וניתוק ממרכזי הבריאות והכלכלה יפגעו קשות באוכלוסייה האזרחית הפלסטינית. על-פי דיווחים של הבנק העולמי, יותר ממחצית מכוח העבודה מובטל, ו-60% מהאוכלוסיה בשטחים הכבושים מתקיימת בפחות מ-$2 ליום. כבר עתה מגיעים דיווחים על מחסור כבד במזון. משפחות הנאבקות על קיומן אינן יכולות לאגור את המינימום ההכרחי לקראת הימים שיבואו.

מלחמה זו היא שעת מבחן לכל מי שמאמין בעתיד יהודי-ערבי משותף, עתיד של שלום וצדק לכל תושבי המזרח התיכון. זוהי השעה עבור כולנו, יהודים וערבים, לעמוד יחד ולעשות כמיטב יכולתנו לסכל כל ניסיון מצד ממשלת שרון להשתמש באווירת המלחמה והאיפול התקשורתי כדי לקדם את תוכניות הסיפוח והטרנספר הזוחל. בחודש מרס פתחנו במבצע חירום להעברת סיוע לשטחים הכבושים. טונות של קמח, אורז, סוכר ומצרכי מזון בסיסיים הועברו לכפרים שונים ברחבי הגדה המערבית.

בשבת, 22 במרס, יצאנו בשיירת סיוע חירום המונית לכפרים באזור סלפית הנתונים לסכנת סיפוח. ביקשנו לסייע לאוכלוסייה האזרחית לעמוד מול הסגר, הכתר, הרעב והאבטלה. לא ניתן לאווירת המלחמה לאטום אותנו בפני המתחולל. השיירה הערבית-יהודית היא תשובתנו למדיניות ההרג וההרס של בוש-שרון.
