ישראלים רבים הגיעו למסקנה שהמשך ההתנחלויות והכיבוש ברצועת עזה מסוכן ומזיק. כעת ברור יותר כי התוצאות הטרגיות ישפיעו לא רק על הפלסטינים הכלואים באחד מחבלי הארץ הצפופים והעניים בעולם, אלא גם על הישראלים. במובן זה, ברור כי רק נסיגה מלאה מהרצועה יכולה לבשר על ראשיתו של עתיד אחר.

אבל, בזמן ששרון מנסה לקדם "התנתקות" חד-צדדית מעזה, הוא קובע עובדות חדשות בגדה המערבית. שם הוא רוצה לשכפל את רצועת עזה. הוא מקים מכלאות ענק, בונה חומות ומגדר ערים, שכונות ויישובים פלסטיניים, יוצר מובלעות, מפריד בין בתים לשדות, מנשל איכרים מאדמתם, ילדים מבית ספרם, זורע הרס, עוני ושנאה. כדי שהנסיגה מעזה תוביל להפסקת מעגל הדמים, עליה להיעשות תוך הסכמים עם העם הפלסטיני, הסכמים שיאפשרו פרנסה וכבוד ולא חיי מכלאה.
 
הנסיגה מעזה לא תהיה שלב בדרך לשלום כאשר קלקיליה וטול כרם הופכות לגטאות, וחומות בטון עוברות בלב השכונות הערביות במזרח ירושלים. לא יהיה שלום אם כדי לשמור על אריאל ועל שאר ההתנחלויות, עשרות אלפי כפריים פלסטיניים מאבדים את הגישה לאדמתם ואת חופש התנועה, והופכים לאסירים במובלעות, מנותקים מהערים הפלסטיניות. מעגל הדמים לא ייפסק כל עוד ממשיכים להתנחל בגוש קטיף, באריאל או בחברון.

בחודשים האחרונים ניסו עשרות אלפי כפריים בגדה המערבית לעצור בגופם את הבולדוזרים. הם זעקו שפרנסתם נגזלת, שזכויותיהם נרמסות, שהם נכלאים מאחורי גדרות ומושפלים בשערי ביתם. ביקרנו אצלם, דיברנו איתם והשתתפנו בחלק מהפגנותיהם. הם רואים בנו שותפים רצויים, ומעבירים לכל הישראלים שוחרי השלום מסר פשוט: יהיה שלום אם יהיה סוף לכיבוש, אם יפורקו הגדרות וההתנחלויות, אם הפלסטינים כולם יזכו לעצמאות, ולכל אותם תנאים וזכויות שאנו הישראלים תובעים לעצמנו.

Many Israelis came to the conclusion that the continuation of settlement and occupation in the Gaza strip is harmful and dangerous. Now it is clear that the tragic results will affect not only the Palestinians locked in one of the most dense and impoverished parts of the world, but also Israelis. Therefore it is clear that only a full withdrawal from Gaza can promise a new future.

However, while trying to advance a “disengagement” policy in Gaza, Sharon establishes new facts in the West Bank. Sharon wishes to duplicate Gaza there. He creates massive cages and walls, encircles cities, neighbourhoods and Palestinian villages, creates enclaves, separates farmers from their land, pupils from their school, destroys and creates poverty and hatred. In order that the Gaza pullout will stop the vicious circle of bloodshed, it has to be done under agreement with the Palestinian people, agreements that will enable proper livelihood and dignity and not life in a cage.

Withdrawal from Gaza is not a step to peace if Qalqilia and Tulkarm become ghettos, and concrete walls are erected within Arab neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem. There will be no peace, if in order to guard Ariel and the rest of the settlements tens of thousands of Palestinian villagers loose access to their land and freedom of movement, and become prisoners in cages, disconnected from the Palestinian towns. The vicious circle of bloodshed will not stop as long as settlers continue to settle in the Qatif block, Ariel or Hebron.

In the last few months tens of thousands of villagers in the West Bank tried to stop the bulldozers with their body. They were protesting against their stolen livelihood and stolen rights, protesting that they are locked behind fences and humiliated at the gates of their homes. We visited them, talked to them and participated in part of their demonstrations. They welcome us as partners, and have the following message for all peace loving Israelis: there will be peace if there is an end to occupation, if the settlements and walls are dismantled, if all Palestinians will gain independence, and if they have all the rights and living conditions we Israelis demand for ourselves.
