The children had great fun today. Visitors
arrived from Yata, the district capital, and neighbouring hamlets.
The children built pots with clay, did juggling, musical chairs, batic,
building and flying kites, falafel was brought from Yata.
Women in the village are interested in womens' activities.
We thank everybody for the donations, we
continue to collect money for the amelioration of the infrastructure of
the school. Donation details above.
Update
13th July 2004
This morning several settleres from the
Ma'on farm arrived to the hamlet (the farm was cleared out a few times
before by the army and police) and dropped into the hamlet's main
cistern a few dead chickens and an insecticide. Settler violence
happens a lot and for a long time. The cistern is a good one, it gets
filled pretty quickly, it is clean and big, and when it is full the
residents use siphons to pass surplus water to lower cisterns. The
cistern is the main water source of the village (there are no running
water). Cleaning it will necessitate a lot of work. Police arrived but
past experience is that usually they don't find any suspects and do not
provide the Palestinians any protection.
Update 14 July 2004
Today the campers
went to the district town, Yata, and visited the summer camp there.
They visited the town hall and
other public institutions there. First the soldiers refused the busses
that had to take the children to Yata in Twane,
but finally agreed. Today there was a lot of Army and
civilian administration presence, probably because of the cistern
poisoning by the Maon Farm settlers yesterday.
One of the camp guides was beaten by a civilian administration employee
by the name of Asaf. That
Asaf asked him for the phone number of the village mayor, he did not
know, and was beaten, and summoned to questioning tomorrow by the
Shabak (Shin Bet, the notorious General Security Service). Ladies from
Machsom Watch arrived and asked if and how they can help with the issue
of water. The civilian administration is not interested to help with
the water, only take off the road block temporarily to let water tanks
through, and only for that purpose and duration. All access to the
village is blocked save for some improvised access. The region
experiences a major water problem, and a project suggested by a French
Hydrological association was not permitted by the settlers. A nearby
settlement - Maon Farm - enjoys continuous running water from the
biggest reservoir in the region. They also have electricity. The civil
administration refused to connect the hamlet to the general network and
as a result they use generators.
Tomorrow a theatre group from East Jerusalem will give a show to the campers.
Update
17 July 2004
Today more than 20 volunteers arrived
to participate in the summer camp, among them many internationals. The
activities were interesting and happy, and the visitors' skills were
used well. There was large army and police presence to provide
protection from the settlers. Afterwards the activists toured other
hamlets in the region.
