On Saturday,
August
10th 2002, 400 Ta'ayush activists
tried to hold a joint Palestinian-Israeli
demonstration in Bethlehem, but were brutally halted by the Israeli
police and army.

demonstration was therefore held on both checkpoints leading to
Bethlehem, under the following slogans:
Freedom, Security and Peace between the
two peoples
There is a partner
Stop the occupation
Stop the bloodshed

Over
the past few months Ta’ayush
activists have been meeting with Palestinian representatives in the
Bethlehem area. The participants searched for ways to act together in
stopping the bloodshed and the occupation by use of non-violent
methods.
In their last meeting, that took place at the beginning of this week in
the office of the Governor of Bethlehem and in which representatives
from most of the Palestinian organizations participated (including the
Hamas and Jihad), it was agreed to hold a joint mass demonstration
under the slogan of “Freedom, Peace, and Security to both People”.
“Rivers of blood are flowing from Gaza to Meron”, said a Hamas
representative, “and we must act together to stop this terrible
bloodshed”.
During the past few weeks, while still under curfew, the two sides have
met at various sites in Bethlehem and its surroundings. It was clear to
both sides that the importance of planning a joint action surpasses the
danger of breaking the curfew. It was finally agreed on a chain of
activities beginning with the joint mass demonstration that was due
take place on Saturday in Bethlehem.
The existence of such meetings, in a time of suicide bombings, curfew
and assassinations, proves that on both sides there are those who
oppose the use of violence and who believe that the occupation and
cycle of horror must and can be brought to an end through dialog. These
meeting refute the claim of the Israeli military and Shin Bet, that
there is no one to talk with on the Palestinian side.
In each meeting, the participants’ continuously raised the urgent need
to present an alternative voice to the sounds of gunshots and tanks
that have been heard in Bethlehem during the last months. In the
demonstration we wished to raise our voice to the government of Israel
not to ignore the peace aspirations among both Palestinians and
Israelis.

בחודשים
האחרונים התקיימו מפגשים בין פעילים מתעאיוש לבין נציגים פלסטינים מאיזור
בית לחם. המשתתפים חיפשו דרכים לפעול יחד להפסקת שפיכות הדמים והכיבוש
בדרכים לא אלימות.
בפגישה אחרונה שהתקיימה בתחילת השבוע במשרדו של מושל בית לחם, בהשתתפות
נציגי מרבית האירגונים הפלסטיניים (כולל החמאס והג'יהאד)
סוכם לקיים בשבת הקרובה הפגנה המונית משותפת תחת הסיסמה "חירות, שלום
ובטחון לשני העמים".
"נהרות דם זורמים מעזה ועד מירון", אמר נציג החמאס, "ועלינו לפעול יחד כדי
להפסיק את שפיכות הדמים הנוראית".
בשבועות האחרונים, בעיצומם של ימי העוצר, נפגשו הצדדים במקומות שונים בבית
לחם וסביבותיה. לשני הצדדים ברור היה שהחשיבות בתכנון פעולה משותפת עולה
על הסכנה שבהפרת העוצר.
בפגישות סוכם על שרשרת פעולות שתחילתן בהפגנה המונית משותפת שתתקיים בבית
לחם. קיום המפגשים בזמן פיגועים, עוצר וחיסולים, מוכיח שבשני הצדדים ישנם
רבים המתנגדים לאלימות וסבורים שניתן וצריך להביא לסיום הכיבוש תוך
הידברות, ובכך לצאת ממעגל האימה. מפגשים אלו מפריכים את טענת הצבא והשב"כ,
שאין עם מי לדבר בצד הפלסטיני.
בכל הפגישות חזר ועלה הצורך הדחוף להשמיע קול אלטרנטיבי להדי היריות
והזחל"מים הנשמעים בבית לחם בחודשים האחרונים.
בהפגנה ביקשנו לקרוא לממשלת ישראל לא להתעלם מהשאיפה לשלום אצל פלסטינים
וישראלים כאחד.
