Convoy to Deir El-Khattab

Ta’ayush together with several other Jewish, Muslim, and Christian organizations, including Rabbis For Human Rights, Windows, Arabica, Carittas, World Vision and the Union of Charitable Relief sent a food convoy to Deir El-Khattab on June 4th. What follows is some background information about the village.
The village’s plight came to our attention following the death of Tabbarak Odeh, a two-year-old girl who suffered from Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy and died during the five week strict military curfew because her parents ran out of medication and were not allowed out of their house in order to procure it from a pharmacy in Nablus.
Deir El-Khattab is located about 3 km east of Nablus and is comprised of about 350 families. Like almost all villages in the West Bank families live off of subsistence agriculture and leasing out day labor. Until the second Intifada, everyday 3 or 4 buses would leave Deir El-Khattab at 3:30 in the morning, full of laborers on their way to Israel. After the Intifada erupted, they all lost their jobs. The dire poverty created by the hermetic closure is now the predicament of all West Bank villages and towns.
The Nablus municipality is providing public relief work for the unemployed -- which is currently between 60 and 80 percent -- paying 20 shekels [~$4] a day, so that residents can buy basic foodstuffs. Only city residents, however, are eligible; people from nearby villages are not.
Due to the military siege there is no way to go with a convoy of cars to the village, as we usually do. We decided, nonetheless, to send a truck of basic foodstuffs if only to alleviate momentarily the residents’ plight.
The truck with the 320 packages of foodstuffs reached its destination on Tuesday, June 4th after being stopped a few times along the way by the military. The village residents met the representatives who brought the food and together they distributed it.

להלן קצת רקע על הכפר.
מצבו החמור של הכפר הגיע לאוזנינו בעקבות מותה של טאבאראק עודה, פעוטה בת
שנתיים שסבלה משיתוק-מוחין ומאפילפסיה ומתה בעת שהכפר היה נתון תחת עוצר של
חמישה שבועות, משום שהתרופות שהיו בידי הוריה אזלו והם לא קיבלו אישור לצאת
מביתם כדי לקנות תרופות בבית-מרקחת בשכם.
דיר אל-חטב נמצא כשלושה קילומטר ממזרח לשכם ומונה כ-350 משפחות. כמו רובם המכריע
של הכפרים בגדה המערבית, המשפחות מתקיימות מגידול חקלאי למחייתן ומעבודה בשדות
כשכירי-יום. עד שפרצה האינתיפאדה השנייה יצאו מדיר אל-חטב מדי יום ב 3:30 לפנות
בוקר שלושה או ארבעה אוטובוסים עמוסים בפועלים בדרכם לישראל. כולם איבדו את
עבודתם עם פרוץ האינתיפאדה. העוני הנורא, תוצאת הסגר ההרמטי, הוא כעת מנת-חלקם
של כל כפרי הגדה ועריה.
עיריית שכם מעסיקה את המובטלים (שיעור האבטלה כיום הוא בין 60 ל-80 אחוז)
בעבודות ציבוריות בשכר של 20 שקל ליום, כדי שהתושבים יוכלו לקנות מצרכי-מזון
בסיסיים. אלא שרק תושבי העיר זכאים לכך, ולא תושבי הכפרים הסמוכים.
בשל המצור המוטל בידי הצבא, אין כל אפשרות להגיע לכפר בשיירת מכוניות כפי שאנו
עושים בדרך-כלל. למרות זאת החלטנו לשלוח משאית של מצרכי-מזון בסיסיים כדי להקל
ולו לזמן-מה על מצוקתם של התושבים.
המשאית, עם 320 חבילות של מצרכי מזון בסיסיים הגיעה ליעדה ביום שלישי, 4 ביוני, לאחר
שנעצרה מספר פעמים בדרכה על-ידי הצבא הישראלי. תושבי הכפר פגשו את נציגי הארגונים
וביחד הם חילקו את החבילות.
